Trump Takes Lead in Efforts to End Sudan War Amid Rising Humanitarian Crisis

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that President Donald Trump is personally overseeing efforts to bring an end to the civil war in Sudan, which has now entered its third year and caused acute suffering for civilians.

Speaking during a White House cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rubio described Trump as “the only leader in the world capable of resolving the Sudan crisis.”

Last month, Trump announced that the US would work with Quad members – the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt – along with other regional partners, to broker a resolution to the conflict. Trump noted that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had requested his intervention to stop the escalating violence.

Conflict Background

The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 when the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) clashed with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over control of strategic regions, including the capital Khartoum.

Recent RSF advances have complicated peace negotiations. The paramilitary group claimed control of Babnusa, a key gateway to western Darfur, which was seized last month. The SAF has disputed the RSF’s claims.

The RSF’s capture of el-Fasher, the last SAF stronghold in Darfur, followed an 18-month siege and has been accompanied by widespread allegations of atrocities, including mass killings, sexual violence, and forced displacement of non-Arab ethnic groups.

The latest RSF assault on Babnusa appears to violate a unilateral ceasefire announced by the group following Quad mediation. The SAF has rejected the ceasefire terms as biased in favor of the RSF.

Humanitarian Crisis

The United Nations reports that the war has killed more than 40,000 people, although aid groups warn the actual toll is likely much higher. Millions have been displaced, and parts of the country are facing famine, marking Sudan’s conflict as the world’s largest ongoing humanitarian crisis.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk expressed fear of further atrocities as intense fighting continues between the SAF and RSF. The UN Human Rights Council has already initiated an inquiry into alleged crimes committed by the RSF during its offensive in Darfur.

Global Diplomacy

Trump’s involvement highlights the growing international concern over the Sudan conflict. Efforts by the Quad and other partners aim to stabilize the country, prevent further atrocities, and secure a lasting peace.

As fighting continues and RSF advances, the road to peace remains uncertain, but the US-led initiative under Trump underscores a renewed push to end one of the most violent crises in the world today.
