A special envoy linked to former US President Donald Trump has proposed including Italy in the FIFA World Cup in place of Iran, sparking fresh debate.
According to reports, Trump’s representative Paolo Zampolli put forward the suggestion to FIFA officials as well as US leadership. The proposal is being viewed as part of broader efforts to strengthen ties between the United States and Italy, particularly after recent tensions involving criticism related to the Iran conflict.
Despite the proposal, Iran’s national football team has already expressed its willingness to participate in the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States. President Trump has also previously stated that Iran would be welcomed in the tournament.
The suggestion has drawn attention as it mixes sports with ongoing political dynamics, though no official decision has been made regarding any changes to the tournament lineup.
