President Donald Trump’s flagship legislation — dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” — is on the brink of collapse in the House of Representatives, as Republicans fracture over the bill’s massive fiscal implications and aggressive social spending cuts.
House Speaker Mike Johnson was forced to hold open a key procedural vote well past midnight, desperately trying to sway GOP holdouts during frantic backroom negotiations. The bill, which narrowly cleared the Senate by a single vote, must now pass the House again to finalize amendments made by the upper chamber.
“We’re going to get there tonight. We’re working on it and very, very positive about our progress,” Johnson told reporters, as quoted by Politico.
The 887-page package delivers on several of Trump’s top campaign promises, including:
· A boost in military spending
· Funding for mass deportation of undocumented migrants
· A $4.5 trillion extension of Trump-era tax cuts
But it also comes with a steep cost: $3.4 trillion added to the national debt over the next decade, and the largest rollback of Medicaid since its inception in the 1960s.
Divisions Deepen Within GOP
Moderates fear backlash from voters over nearly $1 trillion in health care cuts, which could leave up to 17 million Americans without insurance and trigger widespread rural hospital closures.
Meanwhile, fiscal conservatives — or “budget hawks” — argue the bill doesn’t go far enough in cutting spending, criticizing it for breaking earlier promises of deeper deficit reduction.
The GOP leadership can only afford to lose three Republican votes in the razor-thin House margin. As of midnight, more than two dozen lawmakers were either openly opposed or undecided.
Earlier in the day, one of the bill’s preliminary “test” votes dragged on for seven hours and 31 minutes — the longest vote in House history, signaling how deep the resistance runs.
Trump Applies Pressure
Trump has personally intervened, holding a closed-door White House meeting with holdout Republicans and publicly lashing out on Truth Social:
“What are the Republicans waiting for? What are you trying to prove??? MAGA is not happy, and it’s costing you votes!!!”
The bill faces a self-imposed July 4 deadline for final passage, as Trump hopes to declare a legislative victory heading into Independence Day.
A Historic Gamble
The sweeping legislation — blending tax reform, immigration crackdowns, and social safety net rollbacks — reflects Trump’s vision for a second term. But it also reveals deep fault lines within the Republican Party: between MAGA loyalists, traditional conservatives, and nervous moderates.
Should the bill fail, it would deal a blow not only to Trump’s legislative agenda but to Speaker Johnson’s authority, raising questions about whether the GOP can govern under growing internal dissent.
