TTAP Sit-In Continues as PTI Seeks Family Meeting With Imran Khan

The sit-in staged by the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) entered its fifth day on Tuesday, as leaders expressed hope that at least one family member of the incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan or a senior party leader would be allowed to meet him.

The protest, which began on Friday outside Parliament House, was extended after opposition leaders decided to “see the government’s response” to their demand for access to the former premier. Concerns about Khan’s health intensified following a medical examination conducted at Adiala Jail on Sunday.

Around 5pm, PTI leader Asad Qaiser confirmed that the sit-in at Parliament House was continuing. Earlier in the day, a post from PTI’s official X account claimed that a vehicle carrying Imran Khan’s sisters was stopped at the Chakri Interchange while en route to Adiala Jail.

Leaders Seek Jail Access

TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Ahmed Yousafzai told Dawn that Tuesday was designated as a meeting day with Imran Khan. He said two sit-in participants — Salman Akram Raja and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan — were expected to visit the jail, as their names had been included on the approved visitors’ list.

Yousafzai also expressed hope that all three sisters of the former premier, or at least one family member, would be permitted to meet him. “It will end the rumours about the health of Imran Khan, as they will directly hear from him,” he said, adding that the family would address a press conference following the meeting.

He further argued that allowing the meeting could help defuse tensions if the government’s medical report was accurate. “During the last two years we have been deceived a number of times, due to which the level of trust has been reduced,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Sohail Afridi and members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly continued their demonstration outside KP House in Islamabad. Yousafzai said he had met the chief minister the previous night, and an evening meeting was planned to decide the alliance’s next steps.

Supreme Court Intervention

Imran Khan’s family and associates had reportedly been barred from visiting him for several weeks. However, intervention by the Supreme Court of Pakistan last week allowed PTI lawyer Salman Safdar to meet him. Safdar later submitted a report to the court quoting Khan as saying he had only 15 per cent vision remaining in his right eye.

The claim triggered a strong reaction from the opposition alliance, prompting the ongoing sit-in demanding better medical access and treatment.

PTI Rejects Medical Report

PTI leaders and family members have rejected the medical report issued by a team of doctors who examined the jailed ex-premier. They insist he be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for examination in the presence of his personal physicians.

In a post on X, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram cited a statement by Imran Khan’s longtime personal physician, Dr Aasim Yusuf, who reportedly said he neither met nor examined Khan and therefore could not confirm or deny the findings of the jail medical report.

PTI rejected the report and reiterated its demand that Imran Khan be allowed immediate access to his family and personal physician, and be examined at Shifa International Hospital.

In a separate statement, Khan’s sister Aleema Khanum also dismissed the circulating medical reports, saying there was “no way” to verify their authenticity. She demanded that her brother be urgently transferred to a proper medical facility where he could be examined by qualified specialists under Dr Yusuf’s supervision and in the presence of family members.

Aleema announced that the family would attempt to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail at 1:30pm and hold a press conference outside the facility at 4pm following the meeting.

As political tensions rise, the continuation of the TTAP sit-in signals a growing standoff between the opposition and the government over access to and transparency regarding the former prime minister’s health and incarceration conditions.
