UK Suspends Study Visas for Pakistan & Bangladesh Amid Asylum Concerns

The British government has temporarily suspended the issuance of study visas for students from Pakistan and Bangladesh, leading at least nine major UK universities to halt new admissions from both countries. The decision follows the introduction of strict new conditions aimed at preventing misuse of the student visa system.

According to officials, the move was prompted by a growing trend of students applying for political asylum shortly after arriving in the UK on study visas. This pattern placed Pakistan and Bangladesh in a high-risk category, prompting stricter scrutiny and tighter visa requirements.

Under the new guidelines, universities may only admit students whose sole intention is education. Any students suspected of seeking asylum, misusing visa exemptions, or attempting to obtain permanent residency through educational routes will not be admitted. Current reports suggest that around 20% of Pakistani student visa applications are being rejected.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the planned deportation of 22-year-old Pakistani-origin Mohammad Azhan has been halted. Despite previous allegations of drug trafficking, school misconduct, and carrying a knife to class, a British tribunal accepted his appeal. He will remain in the UK after being recognized as a “star student.”

Authorities reaffirm that any attempt to exploit the education system for permanent residency will not be tolerated, and universities have been instructed to enforce rigorous assessments before offering admissions.
