Ukraine Shoots Down 58 of 67 Russian Shahed Drones in Overnight Attack

Ukraine’s air force reported successfully intercepting 58 out of 67 Russian Shahed drones launched in a large-scale overnight attack. The assault prompted a significant air defense response across 11 regions in Ukraine.

According to a statement posted on Telegram, the Ukrainian air defense units managed to shoot down the majority of the drones. Debris from the intercepted drones was discovered near Kyiv’s parliament building, marking a rare breach into the city’s highly protected central area.

The Ukrainian parliament released photographs showing drone debris scattered around the vicinity, including at the foot of the steps leading to the main entrance. These images also depicted a piece of shrapnel-riddled metal near the building, highlighting the intensity of the attack.

Witnesses in Kyiv reported hearing a series of explosions shortly after 3 a.m. local time, with some blasts reverberating throughout the city center and disturbing residents' sleep.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Moscow has launched thousands of missiles and drones into Ukraine. The Shahed drones, which have been used by Russia since September 2022, offer a more cost-effective alternative to expensive missiles. Despite their lower speed and minimal heat signature, making them challenging to track, Ukraine’s air defense systems have been increasingly adept at intercepting these threats.

The drones were reported to have been launched from two border regions in Russia and from the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula. The attack underscores the ongoing volatility of the conflict and the persistent threat posed by Russian military operations.
