Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Makes Surprise Visit to Philippines to Boost Peace Summit, Opens Embassy in Manila
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the Philippines, marking his first visit to the country. Zelenskyy's trip to Manila included the significant announcement of Ukraine's decision to open its embassy in the Philippine capital.
During his visit, President Zelenskyy held crucial discussions with his Philippine counterpart, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., marking their first-ever face-to-face bilateral meeting. Expressing gratitude, Zelenskyy thanked Marcos for his backing of the high-level peace summit scheduled in Switzerland later this month. The summit, slated for June 15-16, aims to bring together over 100 nations in a collective effort to resolve Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
However, uncertainties loom over Marcos's participation in the summit, with questions arising whether he would attend personally or delegate representation.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated as China dismissed allegations made by President Zelenskyy regarding pressure on countries not to attend the peace summit. In response, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, emphasized China's neutral stance on the war in Ukraine and advocated for efforts conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
President Zelenskyy had earlier accused Beijing of obstructing countries from attending the summit, prompting China to criticize the event's exclusion of Russia.
Amidst these diplomatic maneuvers, a Russian official issued a stark warning to the US against allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory, cautioning of potentially dire consequences. The warning comes in the backdrop of NATO countries relaxing restrictions on Kyiv's use of Western weapons, raising concerns of broader global conflict.
As international tensions mount, proposed European sanctions targeting transshipments of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) are unlikely to significantly impact Asian buyers, according to European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson. The sanctions aim to restrict new investments and provisions for completing LNG projects in Russia but are deemed manageable for global markets.
President Zelenskyy's surprise visit to the Philippines underscores the intricate diplomatic maneuvers underway ahead of the peace summit, as global powers navigate complex geopolitical dynamics amidst the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
