UN Urges Dialogue Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

The Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General has reiterated the UN's commitment to promoting peace and dialogue between Pakistan and India amid rising tensions following a recent deadly incident in occupied Kashmir.

In an official statement, the UN Deputy Spokesperson emphasized that the resolution of longstanding and complex issues between the two South Asian nations is possible through constructive engagement. He added that the UN is prepared to support any initiative aimed at reducing hostilities and fostering dialogue between the two countries.

The statement comes in the wake of a tragic incident on April 22, when 26 people were killed and several others injured during a firing incident at a tourist spot in Pahalgam, Indian-occupied Kashmir. India promptly blamed Pakistan for the attack without presenting any evidence and unilaterally suspended cooperation under the Indus Waters Treaty — a decades-old water-sharing agreement between the two nations.

Pakistan strongly condemned the attack, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif offering full cooperation for an impartial international investigation into the incident. He reaffirmed that Pakistan stands for peace but also warned that any aggression from India would be met with a response that would not be forgotten.

India, meanwhile, has escalated its rhetoric and hinted at possible retaliatory actions. However, both the political and military leadership in Pakistan have categorically stated that the country is fully prepared to defend itself.

The UN Secretary-General has once again called for restraint and urged both nuclear-armed neighbors to avoid escalation, expressing his willingness to support any peaceful resolution to the growing crisis.
