POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

A heated altercation broke out in the National Assembly on Monday during Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb’s closing speech on the federal budget, as opposition members from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clashed with government lawmakers, disrupting the session.
The National Assembly session, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, witnessed an uproar when PTI lawmakers attempted to approach the Finance Minister while he was wrapping up the budget debate. In response, treasury members formed a protective circle around the minister.
Amid loud sloganeering by the opposition, tensions escalated when PTI MNA **Iqbal Afridi got into a physical scuffle with Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi. Other parliamentarians quickly intervened to deescalate the situation and separate the two.
Despite the ruckus, Finance Minister Aurangzeb continued addressing the House, defending the government’s economic strategy and budgetary allocations. However, the constant interruptions forced Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to call repeatedly for order in the House.
The scuffle reflects the increasingly polarized atmosphere in Parliament as the opposition intensifies its protest against the federal budget, calling it anti-people and inflationary. PTI lawmakers have accused the government of sidelining public interests and ignoring their proposed amendments.
So far, no official action has been taken against any member involved in the scuffle, but political observers expect Speaker Sadiq to issue a warning or take disciplinary measures in the coming days to restore decorum.
The incident has drawn criticism from civil society and political analysts, who argue that elected representatives must maintain democratic norms and resolve differences through debate rather than confrontation.
