US Embassy Team Meets Zahir Jaffer in Adiala Jail, Provides Consular Access

A delegation from the United States embassy in Islamabad, consisting of Michael Murphy, Naveed Ghazi, and Usama Hanif, visited Zahir Jaffer in Adiala Jail on Thursday. Jaffer, a US national, was granted consular access during the meeting, which took place in the office of the jail’s deputy superintendent.

Zahir Jaffer had been convicted of murdering Noor Mukadam in a house in Islamabad in 2021. Following a trial, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an Islamabad court a year later. Throughout the legal proceedings, Jaffer's defense lawyer had argued that the accused suffered from a chronic mental illness.

Additionally, Jaffer's family had sought relief for him based on his US citizenship. This is not the first time that a team from the US embassy has visited Jaffer in jail; a similar visit took place in 2023.

The meeting between the US embassy representatives and Zahir Jaffer underscores the ongoing consular assistance provided to him as a US citizen facing legal proceedings in Pakistan.
