The United States and Israel have reportedly engaged in secret discussions with Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland about forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza, according to officials quoted by The Associated Press.

US and Israeli officials confirmed the outreach but stated it was unclear how much progress was made or at what level discussions took place. Sudanese officials claim they rejected the proposal outright, while Somali and Somaliland officials denied any knowledge of such talks.

The discussions began last month, days after former US President Donald Trump publicly suggested the idea of forcibly relocating Palestinians and “taking over” Gaza. The proposal was widely condemned as ethnic cleansing by Palestinian leaders and the international community.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich recently stated that Israel is actively seeking countries willing to accept displaced Palestinians and is setting up a new “emigration department” within its Ministry of Defense.

Experts and analysts have slammed the proposal as a “red line that should not be crossed.” Tamer Qarmout of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies called it an “outrageous” plan, urging global condemnation, especially given that many African nations still struggle with the impacts of colonial legacies.

Reports indicate that the US may have offered Somaliland international recognition in exchange for hosting Palestinians. However, Somaliland’s foreign minister denied receiving any such proposal. Sudanese officials said discussions on the matter had taken place but were “immediately rebuffed.”

With global opposition to forced displacement growing, the US and Israel have yet to officially respond to the reports.
