WhatsApp and Instagram Users Face Outages in Pakistan Amid Internet Disruptions

WhatsApp and Instagram users across Pakistan reported service outages on Saturday, with interruptions in internet services from providers such as Zong and PTCL also being reported, according to the outage tracking website, Downdetector.

According to Downdetector, the highest number of Instagram outages was recorded at 86 in a single hour. WhatsApp users, in particular, reported issues with sending voice notes since 10:45 am. Simultaneously, both Zong and PTCL users also experienced disruptions, with complaints beginning earlier this morning.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has not yet provided a statement regarding the outages. However, this incident follows an announcement made by the PTA in August, attributing the slow internet services across Pakistan to faults in two of the seven international submarine cables—SMW4 and AAE-1—connecting Pakistan to global networks.

While the PTA confirmed that repairs to the AAE-1 submarine cable had been completed, it stated that repairs to the SMW-4 cable would not be finished until early October 2024, implying continued slowdowns and service interruptions in the coming weeks.

Users of major social media platforms in the country, along with the broader internet services, have been significantly affected by these ongoing disruptions. As of now, there is no clear indication as to when these latest outages will be resolved.
