Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is holding urgent talks with leaders and officials from approximately 30 countries as Kyiv seeks more favorable terms in negotiations aimed at ending the war with Russia, now in its fourth year.

The diplomatic push comes as Russia intensifies its offensive in eastern Ukraine, particularly in Donetsk’s strategic city of Pokrovsk, where Moscow has deployed around 156,000 troops. Ukrainian forces reported the largest mechanized assault to date in the city, involving a 30-vehicle convoy, while also carrying out one of the war’s largest drone attacks, temporarily halting flights at four Russian airports.

Diplomatic Pressure and US Involvement

The meeting follows a high-profile discussion between Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aimed at coordinating a peace plan. The so-called “coalition of the willing” is attempting to steer negotiations as European nations warn that their security is at stake and as Russia pushes maximalist demands.

Trump reportedly urged Ukraine to consider rapid settlement options, emphasizing the need for realism regarding potential territorial concessions. Zelenskyy, however, remains firm, stating that Ukraine will not surrender territory, a stance backed by the nation’s constitution. German Chancellor Merz described the moment as “crucial”, emphasizing that territorial decisions are ultimately for the Ukrainian president and people to decide.

Frontline Dynamics

Despite Russian attempts to advance, Ukraine has retained most of its territory in 2025, with only 0.77% of land lost according to the Institute for the Study of War. Russian gains have been costly, with significant losses of armored vehicles and tanks reported around Pokrovsk since October 2023.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has sent additional proposals to the US on collective security guarantees, though details remain unclear. The heightened diplomatic activity coincides with strong US Congressional support for Ukraine, including a $400 million security assistance package and measures to maintain troop levels in Europe.

Ukrainian officials have submitted a revised peace plan to Washington and are coordinating with European partners in the coming days. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is acting swiftly to ensure its security and territorial integrity while seeking international backing in ongoing negotiations.
