The district administration of Khyber in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has enforced a 12-day smart lockdown in response to a confirmed case of mpox, also known as monkeypox, in the Pump House locality of Ghandi, tehsil Jamrud.
According to a notification issued by Deputy Commissioner (Retd) Captain Bilal Shahid Rao, all entry and exit points of the affected area have been sealed. The move, reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan on Friday, aims to curb the spread of the virus within the community.
Under the lockdown, only essential services such as pharmacies, grocery stores, general shops, tandoors, and emergency services are permitted to operate. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the lockdown restrictions during the enforcement period.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with the health authorities, avoid unnecessary movement, and strictly adhere to health protocols issued by the district health department.
The decision follows the detection of a 31-year-old man who tested positive for mpox at Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar while attempting to travel to Dubai. His diagnosis prompted immediate surveillance and contact tracing by the district health officer on orders from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department.
Over the past three years, KP has recorded 17 cases of mpox, with most patients having a history of travel from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia—countries where the virus is endemic. The World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in August last year.
Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus and presents flu-like symptoms along with pus-filled lesions. While generally mild, the disease can become severe, particularly in children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including those living with HIV.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to remain vigilant and responsive to precautionary measures.
