Six Children, Including Four Sisters, Die of Suffocation in Sargodha

In a heartbreaking incident, six children — including four sisters — died due to suffocation in the Sargodha district of Punjab on Monday, Rescue 1122 confirmed.

The incident occurred in Chak Number 12, Jinnah Colony, when the children reportedly climbed inside a large wheat storage drum while playing. The family had just finished cleaning the drum and had momentarily left the area when the children entered it, lying down and becoming trapped. Unable to escape, all six children suffocated to death inside the confined space.

According to Rescue 1122, the deceased have been identified as Saima, Amna, Sawera, Dua Fatima, Sonia, and Maryam. All of them were from the same extended family.

This marks yet another tragic case of accidental suffocation involving children in Punjab. Just a day earlier, two siblings died under similar circumstances in Chak 60/5-L, Burjwala, when they accidentally locked themselves inside an iron drum while playing hide-and-seek.

Such heartbreaking incidents are not isolated. In January, five children — including four siblings and their cousin — lost their lives due to suffocation from smoke caused by burning coal indoors, used to keep warm during winter.

Child safety advocates have raised urgent concerns, calling for greater awareness about the dangers of household storage containers, especially in rural areas. Experts urge parents to ensure that such items are secured and kept out of children's reach to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Local authorities have launched an inquiry and urged families to take extra precautions to protect children in and around the home.
