Twelve people were injured on Tuesday following a gas explosion at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad, authorities confirmed.
According to Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IG) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, the incident occurred at approximately 10:55 a.m. in a canteen located in the basement of the building.
“A gas blast occurred at a canteen in the basement of the Supreme Court building,” IG Rizvi told the media after the explosion.
Out of the 12 injured, nine were shifted to Polyclinic Hospital while three were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Two of the victims remain in critical condition with burn injuries covering 80% and 30% of their bodies, respectively.
“The rest suffered minor injuries, most of which are burn-related,” the IG added.
Videos from the scene showed blood stains on the floor and damaged sections of the court’s basement area. Footage also captured lawyers and staff evacuating the premises following the blast.
IG Rizvi said that police teams, bomb disposal squads, and Rescue 1122 personnel quickly reached the site to investigate.
“Initial investigation revealed there had been complaints of gas leakage in the canteen and tea room for the past three days. Plumbers and technicians working at the Supreme Court were already addressing the issue,” he explained.
On Tuesday morning, technicians were repairing malfunctioning air conditioners in the canteen when gas that had accumulated in the enclosed area ignited and caused the explosion.
“Technicians repairing the air conditioners were among the most affected,” the IG said.
He emphasized that no traces of explosives were found at the scene, confirming that the incident was accidental and not linked to any sabotage or terror activity.
Rescue teams have since secured the site and initiated safety checks to prevent further incidents. Authorities have also launched an inquiry into the cause of the gas accumulation and the alleged negligence in addressing earlier leakage complaints.
