12,000 Vehicles Stranded: FPCCI Warns of Economic Fallout Amid Babrlo Sit-In

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Atif Ikram Sheikh has raised alarms over the severe economic disruptions caused by the ongoing lawyers' sit-in at the Babarloi bypass in Sindh’s Khairpur district.

Speaking to the media, Sheikh revealed that the prolonged blockade on the national highway has stranded over 12,000 commercial vehicles—including 2,500 oil tankers—crippling the supply of essential goods across Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“This is the third consecutive day of the closure. Ration, food, and fuel supplies to multiple provinces have been completely disrupted. Immediate intervention by federal and provincial governments is required,” he urged.

The FPCCI chief also highlighted the cascading effects on the economy, noting:

  • Over 3,000 undeclared containers are stuck at Karachi Port, causing $2 million in daily demurrage losses.
  • 40% of wheat and vegetable shipments have been disrupted.
  • A potential $50 million export loss looms over textile and seafood shipments bound for the EU and Gulf countries.

“The situation is dire. Domestic supply chains are suffering, customs processes are delayed, and trade is at a standstill. The economic cost of inaction is enormous,” Sheikh warned.

He called for the immediate convening of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to address the deadlock and facilitate dialogue between stakeholders to restore normalcy.

“The FPCCI is ready to extend full support to resolve the crisis, but we need decisive leadership and urgent policy coordination,” he concluded.
