Beijing – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a key meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of States (CHS) summit, where both leaders pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
PM Shehbaz highlighted that relations between Pakistan and Russia have improved in recent years, crediting President Putin’s “personal commitment and interest.” He recalled their meeting in Astana last year, which paved the way for high-level delegations and protocols aimed at promoting cooperation in agriculture, iron and steel, energy, and transport sectors.
The prime minister emphasized the importance of the emerging regional trade corridor linking Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, calling it a transformative initiative for connectivity and prosperity in the region. He also expressed gratitude for Russia’s support, terming it a “balancing act in the region,” while affirming that Pakistan respected Moscow’s ties with India but sought to build its own “supplementary and complementary” relationship with Russia.
PM Shehbaz accepted President Putin’s invitation to attend the upcoming SCO Heads of Government Summit in November, expressing eagerness to further strengthen bilateral ties.
President Putin, in his remarks, underscored that Pakistan remained a “traditional partner” of Russia in Asia and expressed readiness to intensify cooperation. He stressed the need to expand bilateral trade, which has already seen a boost following Pakistan’s import of Russian oil last year.
Putin also expressed condolences to Pakistan over recent natural disasters, including floods, and voiced optimism that Pakistan would overcome such challenges under its current leadership. He highlighted cooperation at inter-parliamentary levels and coordination at the United Nations, where Pakistan currently serves as a non-permanent Security Council member.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz appreciated President Putin’s leadership and his efforts to promote Pakistan-Russia relations, expressing confidence that the two countries would continue to move forward in commerce, trade, and other areas of shared interest.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting, PM Shehbaz also held talks with Tajikistan’s President, where both leaders expressed satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation between their countries. They agreed to enhance collaboration in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, regional security, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, reaffirming their shared cultural, historical, and religious ties.
