Zhob – At least five people, including three students and two policemen, were injured in an accidental firing incident at the Zhob Government Boys Degree College on Thursday, according to Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shaukat Mohmand.
Speaking to the media, the SSP confirmed that the firing was the result of an accident involving the gunman of the station house officer (SHO). “The firing happened by mistake and was done by the SHO’s gunman. The gunman had dropped his gun on the ground, which caused it to go off,” he explained.
The students who sustained injuries had come to meet the governor at the college when the incident occurred. Police officials also received injuries during the mishap.
Authorities said the condition of all the injured was stable, and they were promptly shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, police have declared the incident accidental, while further inquiries are underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of mishandling firearms in both public and private spaces. Earlier this month, a teenage girl in Sindh’s Abdul Rehman Shar village was killed when a gun she was cleaning accidentally discharged. Similarly, last year in Karachi, a minor boy died instantly when his father’s pistol went off by mistake.
The Zhob incident adds to a growing number of accidental shootings across the country, prompting renewed calls for stricter firearm safety measures and training.
