A roadside bomb blast was reported on Wednesday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shakardara area of Matta, Swat district, damaging the vehicle of Awami National Party (ANP) senior leader and vice president, Mumtaz Ali Khan.
According to Swat District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Umar, the explosion occurred approximately 300 feet away from Khan’s residence as he was en route to attend a funeral. “After the incident, police reached the spot and began a search operation, which is still underway,” DPO Umar told Dawn.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. DPO Umar reaffirmed that Swat police are fully prepared to handle all kinds of security situations.
Condemning the attack, ANP Central President Aimal Wali Khan stated on social media that the people of Swat have made “unparalleled sacrifices against terrorism and extremism.” The party termed the blast an “attempt to silence those voices that speak for peace, tolerance, and democracy through organised planning.”
The statement reiterated ANP’s long-held position that “terrorists are not the enemies of any sect, nation, or group, but of all humanity,” and urged the government and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action against those responsible.
ANP leaders and workers have long been targets of extremist violence. Earlier this year, in July, Maulana Khan Zeb and a policeman were shot dead by unidentified assailants in KP’s Bajaur district. Two months later, ANP worker Mir Azam Khan was also gunned down in the same district.
The party has faced major tragedies in the past as well. In 2018, senior ANP leader Haroon Bilour was killed in a suicide bombing during an election rally in Peshawar, while his father, Bashir Bilour — a veteran ANP leader and former provincial minister — was killed in a similar attack in December 2012.
Wednesday’s blast once again underscores the persistent threat of militancy in the region and the continued targeting of political figures advocating for peace and democracy.
