Army Chief General Asim Munir Talks Afghanistan Relations, Terrorism, and National Unity

Army Chief General Asim Munir addressed political leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during a meeting in Peshawar, underscoring Pakistan's desire for better relations with Afghanistan while emphasizing the challenges posed by the presence of Fitna al-Khawarij and the spread of terrorism from across the Afghan border.

General Munir described Afghanistan as a "brotherly neighbor" and an "Islamic country," reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to improving relations with its neighboring nation. However, he pointed out that the key issue disrupting these relations remains the presence of extremist elements in Afghanistan, particularly the groups fostering terrorism that spill into Pakistan. He emphasized that this difference would persist until Afghanistan addresses the issue of cross-border terrorism and the presence of Fitna al-Khawarij.

The Army Chief also clarified that no large-scale military operations are being conducted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Instead, targeted actions are being carried out based on intelligence to address the specific threats posed by terrorism. He stressed that the approach is focused on precision rather than broad-based military interventions, which underscores the importance of intelligence and vigilance in combating the ongoing security threats.

Addressing the political leadership, General Munir highlighted the importance of unity in the fight against terrorism. He remarked, "If there is a state, there is politics; if there is no state, there is nothing." He called on all stakeholders to join forces and stand together in combating terrorism without any form of discrimination or prejudice, as he believes this unity is essential for bringing stability and peace to the region.

General Munir also acknowledged that humans are prone to making mistakes but emphasized that the true mistake lies in failing to acknowledge those mistakes and learn from them. This, he said, is crucial for growth and progress, particularly in addressing the security challenges Pakistan faces.

Additionally, the Army Chief reiterated the strong bond between the Pakistani people and the army, dismissing the narrative of a rift as being largely fueled by external agendas. He also expressed encouragement over the political consensus around the National Action Plan (NAP) but stressed that swift action is necessary to ensure its success and effectiveness.

The Army Chief's comments reflect a call for a unified approach to both national security and foreign policy, with a focus on addressing internal and external threats while reinforcing the vital relationship between the people of Pakistan and its military.
