POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
PTI leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser raised concerns in the National Assembly over the restrictions placed on his recent attempt to meet with incarcerated PTI chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail. Speaking on Friday, Qaiser highlighted the challenges faced by his delegation, emphasizing that they were prohibited from discussing political matters during their visit.
Qaiser revealed that when he and fellow PTI members went to Adiala Jail to see Imran Khan, they encountered unexpected limitations on what could be discussed. According to Qaiser, authorities informed them they were not allowed to talk about politics with the PTI leader. “We were told to talk about the weather instead,” he remarked, adding that such restrictions were an affront not only to PTI representatives but to Parliament itself.
The delegation’s visit, initially arranged as an opportunity to update Imran Khan on the political situation, reportedly resulted in what Qaiser described as a disrespectful encounter. He questioned why members of Parliament should face such restrictions, particularly when attempting to visit a political figure who remains deeply influential in the country’s affairs.
Qaiser went on to draw comparisons between the statements made by PTI leaders and those of other political figures, notably Maryam Nawaz. He pointed out that Maryam Nawaz recently made statements encouraging communication with Indian Punjab, a sensitive topic in Pakistan’s political landscape. In contrast, he noted that PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur faced criticism and punitive actions for expressing his views. Qaiser called for consistent standards, stating that all political voices, regardless of affiliation, should be treated equally.
The PTI delegation’s visit comes amid heightened tensions between government authorities and the PTI following Imran Khan’s imprisonment. The government’s stance on limiting Khan’s political communications has drawn mixed reactions, with some supporting measures to maintain stability, while others, including PTI members, argue that such restrictions infringe on political rights.
Asad Qaiser’s remarks in the National Assembly add another layer to the ongoing debate over political freedoms and the treatment of opposition leaders. He urged Parliament to recognize the importance of upholding consistent standards across all political parties, especially regarding freedom of expression.
