The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore granted interim bail to Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in cases related to protest demonstrations and alleged police violence. The court hearings on October 5 allowed the two to avoid arrest, setting bail bonds at Rs 5.5 lakh.
The cases, lodged at Mastigate, Shafiqabad, and Lari Adda police stations, relate to allegations of inciting protests against police action. Anti-Terrorism Court Administrator Judge Manzar Ali Gul presided over the Mastigate case, while Judge Irfan Haider addressed the Shafiqabad and Lari Adda cases. Both judges granted interim bail, preventing the police from making immediate arrests. Imran Khan’s sisters were directed to deposit bond amounts and provide case records from the police.
Interim bail was extended until November 23 for the Mastigate case and until November 8 for the cases from Shafiqabad and Lari Adda police stations. The cases emerged from an incident on October 5, when the two women allegedly participated in protests in Lahore, leading to their temporary detention in District Jail Jhelum. They were released on bail last week.
Aleema Khan spoke to the media outside the court, criticizing the charges against them and the police response to PTI supporters. “We were arrested for what they’re calling ‘provocative speech.’ The way FIRs are being distributed, our system has become a joke,” she said, highlighting that her sister has never engaged in inflammatory speech.
The protests followed PTI's call for demonstrations in Islamabad’s D Chowk on October 4. In response, law enforcement authorities had blocked roads with containers, detaining 30 protestors, including Aleema and Uzma Khan, on charges of inciting violence against police.
PTI leader Imran Khan and his supporters have frequently voiced discontent with what they describe as “targeted suppression” of dissenting voices. Khan has stated that his goal is to reform what he views as a “corrupt and broken” system, seeking justice for his detained supporters, including prominent PTI figures and activists.
