The central mourning procession for the 9th of Muharram departed from Nishtar Park on Saturday afternoon and made its way to Hussainiya Iraniyan Imambargah in Kharadar under tight security arrangements, according to the Karachi Police.
The procession began at 1:29 PM, as confirmed by a police alert, with thousands of mourners participating in the annual religious gathering. Law enforcement personnel, including over 5,500 police officers, were deployed to secure the route and ensure the safety of participants.
In preparation for the day and ahead of Ashura (Muharram 10), which falls tomorrow, authorities implemented strict security measures across the city and other parts of the country. These include mobile service suspension along key procession routes, surveillance via CCTV cameras, and the deployment of army units as part of a nationwide security plan.
Earlier this week, the Karachi Traffic Police issued a comprehensive traffic management plan for Muharram 8 to 10, detailing procession routes and suggested diversions for commuters to avoid congestion and ensure the processions’ smooth movement.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar personally reviewed the arrangements for today’s processions. He was joined by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Senator Waqar Mehdi, and Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon. Together, they visited multiple locations, monitored the flow of processions, and interacted with religious leaders and event organizers to ensure coordination.
Lanjar directed law enforcement agencies to ensure foolproof security and maintain peace during the sensitive period. Officials also reaffirmed their commitment to take action against any attempt to spread sectarian hatred or incite violence, as part of a broader crackdown on hate content during Muharram.
Friday saw similarly strict arrangements for the 8th Muharram, including large-scale deployments and monitoring.
Authorities continue to urge citizens to cooperate with security personnel, follow the traffic and safety guidelines, and report any suspicious activities to nearby police units.
The procession is expected to conclude peacefully at its destination in Kharadar later today, as the city braces for Ashura, a day of major religious significance and heightened vigilance.
