Supreme Court Implements Austerity, Adopts Four-Day Workweek Amid Energy Crisis

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has decided to adopt a range of austerity and energy-saving measures in courts nationwide in response to the ongoing energy crisis.

An emergency meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee was convened to approve the new policies, which aim to reduce expenditures and modernize court operations.

Four-day working week for courts

The committee has approved a four-day working week for the High Courts and the Federal Sharia Court. Under this arrangement, full court operations will continue Monday through Thursday, while limited judicial activities will be carried out on Friday and Saturday.

Similarly, the District Courts will also follow a Monday-to-Thursday schedule, allowing for more efficient management of resources while ensuring judicial services continue.

Reduction in fuel allowances

In a bid to curb expenses, the meeting approved a 50 percent reduction in fuel allowance for judges of the High Courts and the Federal Sharia Court. Fuel allowances for judicial officers at other levels will be cut by 25 percent.

Modernization and energy conservation

To minimize unnecessary travel and costs, the committee has encouraged the use of video links for court proceedings wherever feasible.

Additionally, rotational attendance of court staff will be implemented to further reduce energy consumption in court premises.

Security adjustments

The committee also imposed additional protocols regarding the use of security vehicles, including a ban on their use in high-security zones.

However, the security of judges in regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan will be maintained according to local circumstances.

These measures reflect the Supreme Court’s efforts to contribute to national energy conservation initiatives while ensuring judicial processes continue efficiently.
