The Attorney General of Pakistan has assured the Islamabad High Court of the return of all missing persons. This assurance was made during the hearing of the missing persons case presided over by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani. The court issued a four-page written order that included the Attorney General’s undertaking for the recovery of the missing individuals.
According to the court order, the Attorney General stated that every missing person would definitely be returned to their family. The order also noted that the Attorney General, representing the state and law enforcement agencies, informed the court about the formation of a ministerial committee on enforced disappearances. This committee has prepared recommendations which, upon cabinet approval, will be submitted to the court.
The court's directive highlighted that the Attorney General requested the formation of a high-level committee comprising the Director Generals of secret agencies related to missing persons, a proposal approved by the Director General of Intelligence Bureau (DGIB). This committee may include officials from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), with second high-level officers from agencies such as the ISI and MI also participating.
Furthermore, the Attorney General emphasized that resolving the issue of missing persons requires a political solution. Petitioner lawyer Iman Mazari presented a list of three missing students to the Attorney General, who promised to follow up on their cases and provide information.
The court order underlined that the Attorney General assured that the matter of missing persons has been discussed at the highest levels for a permanent resolution. This commitment marks a crucial step towards addressing the longstanding issue of enforced disappearances in Pakistan.
