An audit report of the Balochistan Textbook Board, prepared by the Auditor General of Pakistan and presented to the provincial assembly, has uncovered financial scams amounting to more than Rs 1.5 billion. The board, which is managed by the Balochistan Education Department, has faced allegations of severe financial mismanagement between 2017 and 2022.
According to the audit report, the national treasury endured significant financial losses in the following areas:
- Suspicious Printing of Books: Loss of Rs 116.4 million due to printing books contrary to requirements.
- Procurement Irregularities: Mismanagement worth Rs 538 million in the purchase of paper and other printing materials.
- Unnecessary Vendor Discounts: Irregularities totaling Rs 238.5 million.
- Building Acquisition: Rs 110 million charged for acquiring a building to house printed materials for schools and colleges.
- License Fees: Rs 210 million lost in unnecessary licensing expenses.
- Tax Under-Deduction: Loss of Rs 272.3 million due to under-deduction of government taxes.
The report, highlighting these severe financial discrepancies, has been forwarded to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for detailed investigation and accountability.
The financial mismanagement, particularly in the critical area of education, has sparked outrage among various stakeholders. Critics argue that such corruption undermines the education sector, depriving students of quality resources and impeding progress in one of the country’s most underprivileged provinces.
The PAC is expected to conduct a thorough probe into these irregularities, ensuring accountability and recovery of the misappropriated funds. Stakeholders across the province are closely watching for swift and transparent action to restore public trust in the education sector.
