Australia Mass Shooting at Bondi Beach Leaves 16 Dead, Government to Review Gun Laws

Australian authorities are reviewing gun laws following a tragic mass shooting at Bondi Beach, Sydney, which left 16 people dead and dozens injured. The incident occurred on Sunday evening during a religious Jewish ceremony at the popular beach location.

Police reported that the shooters were a father and son, identified by local media as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and 24-year-old Naveed Akram. The father was killed during a police operation, while the son was taken to hospital in critical condition. Among the injured were 40 individuals, including two police officers in stable but critical condition. Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years.

Authorities confirmed that the father held a valid firearms licence since 2015 and had six registered guns, all of which have now been seized. Security officials indicated that the younger suspect was previously known to agencies but was not considered an immediate threat. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the suspect had been assessed by the Australian Security Intelligence Service (ASI) in 2019, with no evidence of ongoing danger.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mel Lennon stated that the investigation into the background and motives of both men is ongoing, adding that there is no indication the attack was clearly premeditated. Police declined to comment on whether any flags or written materials were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

In response to the shooting, Prime Minister Albanese announced a review of gun laws, including limits on the number of firearms an individual can hold and the duration of gun licenses, emphasizing that circumstances can change over time and licenses should not be permanent.

Security has been heightened at Bondi Beach, and commemoration activities are underway at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the attack involved only the two identified perpetrators and there is no indication of further threat.

This shooting marks the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996 and has plunged the nation into mourning.
