Bangladesh Court Orders Arrest of Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Amid Allegations of Crimes Against Humanity

In a remarkable turn of events, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal has ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her appearance in court on November 18. Chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam announced the order, stating that Hasina was implicated in widespread human rights abuses during her 15-year rule, which included mass detention and extrajudicial killings of political opponents.
Islam characterized the day as significant, highlighting Hasina's alleged role in committing "massacres, killings, and crimes against humanity" between July and August. Hasina, 77, has not been seen in public since leaving Bangladesh, with her last known location reported to be a military airbase near New Delhi, India.
Her presence in India has sparked outrage in Dhaka, leading the Bangladeshi government to revoke her diplomatic passport. The two nations have a bilateral extradition treaty that could facilitate her return to face trial; however, a clause within the treaty states that extradition may be denied if the offense is deemed to have a "political character."
Hasina's government established the International Crimes Tribunal in 2010 to investigate atrocities committed during Bangladesh's 1971 independence war. However, the tribunal has faced criticism from the United Nations and human rights organizations for its procedural shortcomings and has been perceived as a tool for Hasina to eliminate political rivals.
Currently, the court is probing several cases accusing Hasina of orchestrating the mass murder of protesters, intensifying the already fraught political atmosphere in Bangladesh as her legal battles unfold.
