BUENOS AIRES: Liam Payne, the former One Direction star who achieved global fame with the iconic boy band, was found dead after falling from a third-floor hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires. The news of the 31-year-old English singer’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans worldwide, who gathered outside the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo neighborhood to celebrate his life through song.
Local police reported being called to the hotel following reports of an "aggressive man" who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Upon arrival, officers learned from the hotel manager about a loud noise from the inner courtyard. Sadly, they discovered a man had fallen from the balcony of his room. Audio obtained from the Buenos Aires security ministry revealed a hotel worker urgently requesting police assistance, stating, "When he is conscious he is destroying the entire room and we need you to send someone."
One Direction skyrocketed to fame after Simon Cowell brought together Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson on the British talent show The X Factor in 2010. The band sold an impressive 70 million records globally and produced numerous hits, including "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Story of My Life." Payne was notably involved in co-writing "Story of My Life" and "Night Changes."
Following the band's announcement of an "indefinite hiatus" in 2016, the members pursued individual careers. Payne's last single, "Teardrop," was released in March this year. In a statement, his family expressed their heartbreak, saying, "Liam will live forever in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul."

Payne first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at just 14 years old but was advised by Simon Cowell to return when he was older. Cowell later recognized his potential and brought him back to form the legendary boy band.
American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth, who collaborated with Payne during his career, expressed his shock on Instagram, stating, "I am in shock right now. Liam was always so kind to me." Payne’s collaborations included a 2018 song with Rita Ora titled "For You," and he released his first studio album, LP1, in 2019.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Payne's career with One Direction and as a solo artist contributed to a fortune estimated at $70 million. He is survived by his son, Bear, whom he shares with Girls Aloud singer and British TV personality Cheryl.
Just hours before his tragic death, Payne shared a Snapchat video detailing his experiences in Argentina, mentioning horseback riding and polo, expressing his excitement to return home, and stating, "It’s a lovely day here in Argentina."
