Bangladesh Stun Pakistan with Historic 10-Wicket Test Win, Lead Series 1-0

Bangladesh made history on Sunday by securing their first-ever Test win against Pakistan, clinching the opening match of the two-game series by a commanding 10 wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim’s stunning 191 on a flat Rawalpindi pitch powered Bangladesh to a massive 565, their highest total against Pakistan, earning them a crucial 117-run first-innings lead.
This loss marks Pakistan’s second major upset this year, after their T20 defeat against the USA, and raises further questions about their current form in red-ball cricket. Pakistan has now lost four out of six matches in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Despite entering the match with a strong head-to-head record against Bangladesh, winning 12 out of 13 previous encounters, Pakistan’s all-pace bowling attack faltered on the slow pitch. Bangladesh’s spinners, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz (4-21) and Shakib Al Hasan (3-44), proved decisive on the fifth day, leaving Pakistan’s batsmen reeling.
In response to the defeat, Pakistan recalled leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed for the second Test in place of Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was released from the squad to spend time with his newborn son. Abrar, who has taken 38 wickets in six Tests, will be a key addition as Pakistan looks to balance their bowling attack for the must-win game.
Head coach Jason Gillespie expressed confidence in turning things around in the second match, acknowledging the need for a positive approach but emphasizing that the team must focus on the future. “We want to go out there and play positive cricket,” Gillespie said. “It’s about scoring singles and being ruthless with our bowling.”
Gillespie also defended under-pressure captain Shan Masood, who struggled with scores of six and 14 in the first Test, and has yet to win a Test as captain. “Shan is a very positive captain, and he wants to win games. We showed intent in the first game, but credit goes to our opposition.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe praised his team’s morale and performance, noting that beating Pakistan on their home soil was no easy task. “The morale of the players is very, very good,” he said. “We know Pakistan’s strength, but we’re confident heading into the second Test.”
The second Test is set to feature changes for both sides, with Pakistan adding Abrar Ahmed and Mir Hamza to their lineup, while Bangladesh's pace attack will be bolstered by the return of Taskin Ahmed, who recovered from a shoulder injury.
With a must-win scenario for Pakistan to salvage the series, all eyes will be on the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium for the upcoming clash.
