At least one person was killed and 19 others, including two security personnel, were injured in an explosion near the Chashma Sarbandki checkpost on the Bannu–Miranshah main road in North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, according to police and hospital officials.

Authorities said the blast occurred close to the checkpost in the tribal district, causing panic in the area and leaving several people wounded.

Police officials confirmed that an investigation into the incident is currently under way to determine the nature of the explosion and identify those responsible.

Initially, officials reported that 14 people had been injured in the blast. However, the number later rose to 19 as more victims were brought to nearby medical facilities.

Medical Superintendent Dr Asif Iqbal at the District Headquarters Hospital in Miranshah said that several injured individuals were receiving treatment, adding that at least four of them were in critical condition.

Security personnel and rescue teams quickly reached the site after the explosion and shifted the injured to hospitals for medical care.

The incident comes roughly three weeks after another deadly blast in the region. On February 16, two people were killed and 17 others injured in a powerful explosion near Miryan Police Station in Bannu district.

According to police, that earlier blast occurred when a time bomb planted in a motorcycle detonated near the police station. Among those killed in the explosion was a child.

Authorities have heightened security measures in the area following the latest incident as investigations continue.
