Body of Child Recovered After Falling into Manhole at Karachi’s Nipa Chowrangi

The body of a 3-year-old child who fell into a manhole near Nipa Chowrangi was recovered on Monday, 14 hours after the tragic incident.

According to rescue officials, the child’s body was found approximately 1.5 kilometers from the site of the accident and was immediately shifted to cold storage. The child has been identified as Ibrahim, son of Nabil, who had been visiting a department store with his family around 10:30 pm on Sunday.

Incident and Rescue Efforts

The child reportedly fell into an open rainwater drain while chasing his father, who had gone to park his bike. Initial rescue operations were launched immediately but had to be temporarily halted due to heavy protests from locals. Citizens brought in heavy machinery and assisted in digging at the site themselves.

Angry residents blocked traffic, burning tires and attacking media personnel, disrupting normal life in the area. The blockade affected roads from University Road to Hassan Square but has now been cleared.

Family Grief and Appeal

Ibrahim’s grandfather spoke to the media, expressing deep grief and frustration over delayed assistance. He said: “Despite waiting for over three hours, no relevant authorities arrived to help. People assisted on their own. I request the Governor, Chief Minister, and Mayor of Karachi to help us recover our child.”

Mayor Wahab Responds

Mayor of Karachi Murtaza Wahab confirmed the child fell into a rainwater drain and expressed condolences to the family. He also stated that attempts were made to politicize the incident, which he called unfortunate.

Wahab assured that a full investigation would be conducted, including reviewing CCTV footage and determining how the manhole was left open. He emphasized that legal action would be taken if negligence by Water Corporation staff is proven.

He added that 88,000 manhole covers have been installed in the last year, with 55% distributed to UC chairmen, and said inquiries would clarify why this particular manhole near a department store and hospital remained open.

Political Dimension

The mayor also touched on political sensitivities, noting that the town chairman in the area belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami. Wahab said that while critics might try to politicize the matter, the focus should remain on helping the affected family and preventing similar incidents in the future.

The tragic recovery of young Ibrahim underscores the ongoing challenges of urban infrastructure safety in Karachi, highlighting the need for stricter oversight of open drains and public safety measures.
