Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has convened a key meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on July 12, sources confirmed on Tuesday.
The meeting, to be held under the chairmanship of CJP Afridi, will focus on reviewing pending complaints against members of the judiciary and discussing proposed amendments to the rules governing the council’s proceedings.
According to judicial sources, the meeting aims to streamline disciplinary processes and improve the mechanism through which complaints against judges are handled. The council is expected to take up a backlog of cases that have remained unresolved for months, ensuring progress on matters critical to judicial accountability and transparency.
Review of Rule Amendments
Sources also indicated that potential reforms to the SJC's internal rules may be discussed. These reforms are aimed at enhancing procedural clarity, protecting due process, and speeding up decisions in pending inquiries involving members of the superior judiciary.
The Supreme Judicial Council, constituted under Article 209 of the Constitution, is the highest constitutional body responsible for evaluating complaints of misconduct or incapacity against judges of the Supreme Court and high courts.
Legal observers believe this meeting, under CJP Afridi’s leadership, could set the tone for a renewed focus on institutional accountability and procedural reforms in Pakistan’s judiciary.
