Cleric Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza Detained Under MPO in Jhelum

Jhelum police on Tuesday confirmed the detention of cleric Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance following allegations of controversial remarks in a viral interview.

Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Meesam Abbas and District Police Officer Ahmed Mohiyuddin verified Mirza’s arrest, stating that he will remain in detention for 30 days under Section 3 of the MPO. This law authorizes authorities to detain individuals deemed a threat to public safety or order.

The move came after a religious group filed an application requesting legal action against Mirza, accusing him of making statements that could potentially incite unrest.

Mirza, a resident of Machine Mohallah, Jhelum, is a well-known religious scholar who regularly shares lectures and speeches on social media, particularly on YouTube, where he has gained over 3.1 million subscribers.

This is not the first time the cleric has faced controversy. In 2020, Jhelum police arrested him over alleged derogatory remarks against religious figures, though he was later released on bail. In 2021, he survived an assassination attempt at a religious academy, with the suspect being arrested shortly after. Last year, his speeches were also banned during Muharram, along with those of 16 other clerics, to prevent sectarian tensions.

Authorities argue that the detention is a preventive measure aimed at maintaining peace and avoiding potential sectarian strife. However, the arrest has already sparked debate on social media, with supporters condemning it as suppression of free speech, while critics insist it is necessary for preserving harmony.
