ISLAMABAD: Public speaker, rights activist, and UN Women National Goodwill Ambassador Muniba Mazari has been appointed as a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocate, UN Women announced on Friday.
The prestigious appointment recognises Mazari’s lifelong commitment to advancing inclusion, gender equality, and social justice in Pakistan and worldwide.
As part of her new role, Mazari will join a distinguished group of global leaders and influencers — including Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Queen Mathilde of Belgium — to raise awareness, inspire action, and mobilise support for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UN Secretary-General’s Tribute
In his official letter, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Mazari’s leadership, calling her “an inspiration to many and a prominent voice on inclusion and gender equality.” He added:
“I applaud her numerous achievements and unwavering commitment to equality, and I ask that she leverage her talent, influence, and platform to bring the Sustainable Development Goals to the forefront of global attention and action.”
Muniba Mazari’s Response
Expressing her gratitude, Mazari said the appointment carried great responsibility:
“I am deeply honoured to be appointed as an SDG Advocate. This is not just a title — it’s a responsibility to use my voice for those who remain unheard and to inspire collective action for a healthier, fairer, and more compassionate world. Together, we can accelerate progress for people and the planet.”
Background
Known as the “Iron Lady of Pakistan,” Muniba Mazari has long been a symbol of resilience and empowerment. In 2015, she was appointed as Pakistan’s first female UN Women National Goodwill Ambassador, advocating for the empowerment of women and girls.
Her new global role as an SDG Advocate further cements her place among the leading voices championing equality and sustainable progress on the international stage.
