POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir stressed the “immense potential for a broader, multidimensional relationship built upon mutual respect” between Pakistan and the United States during his ongoing five-day official visit to Washington.
This visit marks a historical milestone as Gen Munir became the first serving army chief to meet face-to-face with a sitting US president, Donald Trump, over a luncheon. He was accompanied by National Security Advisor Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik, who also serves as Pakistan’s intelligence chief.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army chief engaged with prominent US think tanks, scholars, analysts, and representatives of international media in a candid and comprehensive exchange focused on strategic affairs.
Gen Munir highlighted the long-standing “convergences” between Pakistan and the US, particularly in areas such as counterterrorism, regional security, and economic development. He noted that the partnership had the capacity to evolve into a multidimensional alliance underpinned by shared strategic interests and economic interdependence.
“Pakistan remains committed to regional peace, a rules-based international order, and constructive international engagement,” Gen Munir stated during the interaction.
He also cautioned about the “malign influence of certain regional actors” who continue to sponsor terrorism as a tool of hybrid warfare. Citing recent military operations like Marka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, the army chief elaborated on Pakistan’s firsthand experience with combating terrorism.
Gen Munir reiterated that Pakistan had been on the front lines of the global war against terrorism, sacrificing over 90,000 lives and bearing economic losses exceeding $150 billion, as previously highlighted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
He invited global partners to explore investment and collaboration opportunities in key sectors such as information technology, agriculture, mining, and minerals. “Pakistan holds untapped potential that, if harnessed, could lead to shared prosperity,” he added.
The army chief also presented Pakistan’s balanced approach to international conflicts, advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law as essential pillars for peace.
The ISPR noted that the session was widely appreciated by the attendees, who welcomed the “clarity and openness” in COAS Munir’s remarks and recognized the importance of Pakistan’s consistent foreign policy.
The interaction, held amid growing tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, served as a key moment for articulating Pakistan’s regional and global perspectives and for reinforcing Islamabad’s role as a responsible international player.
This landmark visit is expected to usher in a new era of strategic dialogue and cooperation between Islamabad and Washington.
