POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that fresh negotiations with the Afghan Taliban remain possible, emphasizing that Pakistan cannot turn away its friends. The remarks came during an interview with Geo News.
Asif expressed gratitude toward Turkey and Qatar, calling the Turkish delegation a “matter of honor” and describing the Turkish government and nation as Pakistan’s “benefactors.” He noted that if international partners identify opportunities for dialogue and reach out to Pakistan, talks can be pursued.
He added that the Taliban were willing to discuss issues verbally but were reluctant to formalize them in writing, while also pointing out that the Kabul government is not unified. Regarding his previous comments on the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, Asif admitted he regretted the statement he had made at the time.
Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to constitutional reforms, the Defense Minister also hinted that the 28th Constitutional Amendment will follow the 27th, with remaining issues to be addressed in the upcoming amendment.
Several rounds of Pak-Afghan talks have been held, initially in Qatar and later in Turkey, but the negotiations ended without a breakthrough due to the Taliban’s refusal to provide written guarantees, underscoring the ongoing challenges in stabilizing bilateral relations.
