DG ISPR Calls for Tougher Action Against Mafias and Smugglers in Pakistan

Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, has underscored the challenges posed by organized crime and smuggling in Pakistan, calling for decisive action to transform the nation from a "soft state" to a "hard state".
Addressing students and faculty at a university event, Major General Ahmed Sharif revealed that Pakistan conducts approximately 126 intelligence-based operations daily to combat terrorism. He highlighted the need for stringent measures against mafias operating openly and smugglers evading punishment.
"Smugglers are operating with impunity, and mafias are entrenched in our society," DG ISPR stated, pointing out the significant economic impact of smuggling, particularly in the Afghan transit trade. He highlighted issues such as tax evasion at Karachi port and the dominance of a "fake economy" overshadowing the legitimate economy.
"Our real economy stands at $350 billion, but the potential is much greater if we curb the fake economy," he emphasized, citing the role of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in boosting economic growth and attracting foreign investment.
On the security front, Major General Ahmed Sharif expressed concerns over Afghan Taliban support to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) activities in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for regional stability and cooperation to address cross-border security challenges.
He also noted positive developments in Pakistan's export sectors, including information technology (IT), rice, and wheat, attributing the growth to recent policy reforms and enhanced market access.
The ISPR chief affirmed the military's commitment to national security and economic prosperity, urging concerted efforts across sectors to combat crime, strengthen governance, and promote sustainable development.
