Ex-DG ISI Faiz Hameed's Alleged Political Links Under Investigation

Former Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed is under investigation for alleged political activities involving contact with around 50 politicians, predominantly from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Sources have revealed that Faiz Hameed’s direct or indirect links with PTI’s jailed founding chairman, Imran Khan, are a key focus of the probe.

Army Act Restrictions

Under the amended Army Act of 2023, retired military officers who held sensitive roles are prohibited from engaging in political activities for five years after their retirement. Previously, this restriction was limited to two years.

General Faiz, who retired in 2022, is alleged to have violated this rule by maintaining communication with politicians and being indirectly involved in political matters. The investigation seeks to determine whether these interactions breached the Army Act.

Alleged Political Connections

According to reports, Faiz Hameed was in contact with Imran Khan through “multiple channels,” even after the events of May 9, 2023, when PTI supporters staged violent protests. Sources claim these communications continued post-Imran Khan’s arrest.

In August 2024, reports surfaced that Faiz Hameed had been warned multiple times by military authorities about his activities. Despite the warnings, he allegedly persisted, leading to his arrest.

Imran Khan’s Response

Imran Khan has publicly distanced himself from Faiz Hameed's arrest and related allegations. Senior PTI lawyer Intizar Panjotha stated after meeting Khan in Rawalpindi Jail that the arrest was an “internal matter of the army” and unrelated to PTI.

Khan reportedly suggested forming a judicial commission to investigate Faiz Hameed’s role in the events of May 9 and requested the release of CCTV footage from that day to establish facts.

Political Context

The investigation into Faiz Hameed has raised questions about civil-military relations and the extent of the military’s involvement in political affairs. The former ISI chief’s alleged actions also highlight the broader scrutiny of PTI’s connections with powerful figures in the establishment.
