POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has instructed the party leadership to continue advocating for the civil disobedience movement while focusing on global issues. The directives were issued during a phone call with PTI leaders as negotiations between the federal government and PTI officially commenced.
Speaking to Geo News, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram confirmed that Imran Khan has entrusted him, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja with the responsibility of addressing global issues on the party’s behalf.
“Sheikh Waqas Akram said the PTI founder has emphasized that only the three of us should discuss global matters from the party platform,” stated the Information Secretary.
Imran Khan also reiterated his two key conditions for the ongoing talks. The first demand is the unconditional release of all political prisoners, including himself, and the second is the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the incidents of May 9 and November 26.
Khan hinted at reconsidering the call for civil disobedience if tangible progress is seen in the dialogue. "The founder has been clear—without seriousness in the negotiations, the call for civil disobedience will persist," Sheikh Waqas noted.
The first round of talks between the PTI and the federal government’s negotiation committees concluded with an agreement to continue discussions. The next meeting is scheduled for January 2, 2025.
Political observers see these developments as a critical juncture in Pakistan’s political landscape, with the potential to either de-escalate tensions or deepen the divide depending on the outcome of the negotiations.
