Lahore: Former Supreme Court judge Faqir Muhammad Khokhar passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed. He had been recently appointed as chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances (CIED).

Justice Khokhar had been under treatment for cancer at Lahore’s Services Hospital for the past 12 days. His son, Tahir Mehmood, confirmed his demise.

His funeral prayers will be held today at 4:15 PM after Asr in Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Lahore (Phase 8 Mosque), according to an obituary issued by the Lahore High Court (LHC).

A Legal Career Spanning Decades

Justice Khokhar had a long legal career and held various key judicial and administrative positions. His recent appointment as chairman of the CIED came after he replaced Javed Iqbal, who had led the panel since 2011.

Throughout his career, Justice Khokhar:
Served as a Supreme Court judge.
Took oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) in 2007 following the emergency imposed by former President Pervez Musharraf.
Served as Pakistan’s acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in 2008.
Resigned from the Supreme Court in 2009 amid Supreme Judicial Council proceedings.
Served as an independent adjudicator in cricketer Umar Akmal’s spot-fixing case in 2020.

Justice Khokhar was serving as the Secretary of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Division before being elevated to the Supreme Court.
