Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Dies at 100; National Day of Mourning Declared

Washington: Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a renowned humanitarian, passed away on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100. Known for his pivotal role in bringing peace between Israel and Egypt, Carter's legacy extends beyond his presidency, as he dedicated his life to global peace and humanitarian work after leaving office.

Carter's one-term presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant achievements, including the 1978 Camp David Accords, which facilitated a historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt. However, his administration also faced challenges such as a severe economic recession, widespread unpopularity, and the Iran hostage crisis, which overshadowed the latter part of his term.

Although defeated by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election, Carter's post-presidency years solidified his status as a globally respected leader. His humanitarian work, particularly through The Carter Center, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

In a statement from the White House, President Joe Biden announced that January 9 will be a national day of mourning in honor of Carter's contributions. "I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter," said President Biden.

World leaders, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, have paid tribute to Carter's lasting impact on international peace. "His significant role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel will remain etched in the annals of history," Sisi wrote on X.

Public memorial events will be held in Atlanta and Washington before Carter's private interment in Plains, Georgia.
