Four Dead, Three Injured as Bus Skids Off Hazara Expressway in Mansehra

At least four people lost their lives and three others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident on the Hazara Expressway in Mansehra district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred as a passenger bus, traveling from Gilgit to Rawalpindi, skidded off the expressway due to heavy rainfall.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Amir Khadam confirmed that emergency teams promptly arrived on the scene, transferring the deceased and injured to King Abdullah Hospital in Mansehra. According to Khadam, “The incident occurred due to heavy rainfall, causing the bus to slip and veer off the road.” The passengers on board were primarily from Gilgit and Kohistan, Khadam added.

The Mansehra district administration also reported further travel disruptions due to snowfall on Naran-Babusar Road, where traffic was suspended following overnight snow accumulation. Additionally, two sections of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Kohistan, which were temporarily blocked by debris, were reopened after quick response efforts by the National Highway Authority.

The northern regions of KP and Gilgit-Baltistan have been experiencing severe weather, with heavy rain, strong winds, and snowfall in high-altitude areas. This combination has rendered road conditions especially dangerous, particularly on mountainous routes where visibility and traction are compromised.

The rugged terrain and narrow, winding roads of KP and Gilgit-Baltistan contribute to a high accident rate, with recent incidents underscoring the risk. Just a day earlier, two passengers were killed and 36 others injured when a Rawalpindi-bound bus fell into a ravine in Upper Kohistan. In September, a landslide in the Dasu area of Upper Kohistan claimed three lives, including two army personnel.

Experts have long called for improved safety measures in these regions, such as road maintenance, traffic regulation, and weather warnings, to reduce the frequency of accidents.
