G7 Fails to Unite on Ukraine as Zelenskyy Warns “Diplomacy in Crisis”

The Group of Seven (G7) summit concluded Tuesday without issuing a joint statement in support of Ukraine, signaling growing fractures within the bloc amid intensifying global challenges.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who attended the summit to garner support against Russia’s ongoing invasion, warned that “diplomacy is now in a state of crisis” after his appeal failed to unify the world’s leading industrial democracies. A key meeting between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump did not take place, as Trump left the summit early to respond to escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran from Washington.

While leaders of Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with NATO’s incoming Secretary-General Mark Rutte, met Zelenskyy, their inability to issue a united declaration in Ukraine’s favor marks a significant shift from previous summits.

Initial reports from a Canadian official suggested that a joint Ukraine statement had been shelved due to U.S. resistance and Trump’s desire to avoid antagonizing Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, that statement was later walked back by a Canadian spokesperson, who denied any formal proposal had been distributed.

According to AFP, officials clarified that consensus language could not be reached due to divergent positions—especially Trump's, who earlier argued that Russia should not have been expelled from the G8 after annexing Crimea in 2014.

Despite the setback, Zelenskyy secured a major win: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced CA$2 billion ($1.47 billion) in new military assistance to Ukraine and pledged fresh financial sanctions on Moscow.

Meanwhile, Trump endorsed a separate G7 statement on the Israel-Iran conflict before departing. The declaration strongly backed Israel, labeled Iran the “primary source of regional instability and terrorism,” and called for de-escalation—despite Trump’s own combative remarks on social media.

As Zelenskyy left the summit urging continued pressure on Russia and engagement from Trump, the G7’s inability to present a unified stance on Ukraine reflects growing geopolitical fault lines—at a time when unity may be more critical than ever.
