Gilani Refers Non-Compliance of PTI Senator’s Production Order to Privileges Committee

Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday expressed his displeasure over the non-production of PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry in the Senate session, despite issuing production orders for him alongside PTI Senator Aon Abbas Bappi. Gilani has now referred the matter to the Privileges Committee.

Parliamentary Disregard Sparks Action

In a strongly worded ruling, Gilani stated that such disregard for parliamentary authority posed a threat to the institutional integrity of the Senate.

“I hereby refer the matter of non-implementation of the production orders concerning Senator Ejaz Chaudhry to the Privileges Committee for its consideration and report,” he ruled.

While Senator Bappi was presented in the session, the absence of Senator Chaudhry marked the third time that the government failed to comply with his production orders. Chaudhry, imprisoned for 20 months, is currently held at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

PTI Senator Bappi’s Account of His Arrest

Speaking in the Senate, Senator Bappi recounted his arrest on March 6 from his residence in Multan. He alleged that around 20 individuals raided his home, broke the front door, and detained his house staff. He further claimed that he and his wife were in their room when authorities forcefully entered, demanded his mobile phones, and threatened to arrest his 16-year-old son.

Bappi was arrested on charges of illegally hunting Chinkara deer in Cholistan, according to Punjab Wildlife Department. However, he termed the charges a cover-up, stating that his “real crime” was running a campaign against inflation and remaining loyal to PTI Founder Imran Khan.

Chairman Gilani’s Firm Stance

Gilani asserted that the non-compliance of production orders amounted to a “breach of privilege” under Rule 71 of the Senate’s Rules of Procedure (2012).

He recalled a similar situation during his tenure as National Assembly Speaker (1993-1997) and vowed to uphold the supremacy of Parliament, the rule of law, and constitutional authority.

The case is now with the Privileges Committee, which will assess the violation and recommend further action.
