POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Islamabad: The High-Powered Selection Board, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, has approved the promotion of 36 officers from Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), Police Service, and Foreign Service to Grade 22, the highest bureaucratic rank in the federal government.
According to sources, several senior officers were bypassed in favor of junior officers, raising concerns over fairness in the selection process. The board promoted 19 officers from PAS, 8 from the Police Service, and 9 from the Foreign Service. Notably, no Sindhi officer was promoted within the Foreign Service group.
Documents reviewed by Your Newspaper indicate that in the Police Service, officers like Imran Ghani, Ahmad Mukarram, and Aamir Zulfiqar Khan—who ranked highest in the seniority list—were overlooked, while officers ranked lower were promoted. Similarly, in PAS, top-ranked officers such as Amna Imran Khan, Iram Bukhari, and Tahir Khurshid were passed over, with promotions going to officers ranked further down.
In the Foreign Service, the nine officers promoted include Ahmad Naseem Waraich, Rahim Hayat Qureshi, and Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, among others. However, none of the promoted officers belong to Sindh, sparking concerns over regional representation.
Critics argue that the selective promotions may lead to discontent among senior bureaucrats and could set a controversial precedent for future promotions. The federal government has yet to address these concerns.
