Govt Seeks PTI Support for 27th Constitutional Amendment in Key Meeting

The federal government has initiated consultations with the opposition on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, as key federal ministers and Speaker National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq met with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in Islamabad to seek their support.

The meeting brought together senior figures from both sides, including Federal Ministers Azam Nazir Tarar and Rana Sanaullah, alongside Speaker Sadiq, who represented the government. The PTI delegation comprised former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar, Atif Khan, and Shahram Tarakai.

According to sources, the session focused on building consensus over the 27th Amendment and addressing urgent political and constitutional issues. Government representatives emphasized that the amendment was vital to the national interest and would not undermine provincial autonomy.

However, the PTI delegation withheld immediate support, stating that the party’s leadership would make the final decision after reviewing the amendment’s agenda in writing. The opposition also pressed for the prompt appointment of an opposition leader in the National Assembly — a position currently vacant.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq informed the meeting that the appointment issue was pending before the Supreme Court, which had caused delays. He assured that once the court’s written decision was received, it would be forwarded to the Assembly Secretariat for necessary action.

Despite differences, both sides expressed willingness to maintain dialogue and cooperation on constitutional and parliamentary matters.

The 27th Amendment has been a matter of debate across political circles, with discussions focusing on its potential implications for governance and balance of power. The government insists it aims to strengthen state institutions, while the opposition remains cautious about its broader effects.
