Gunman Opens Fire on School Van in Battagram, Six Injured

Six people, including five schoolchildren, were injured after a gunman opened fire on a school van in the Battagram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to Gul Nabi, the spokesperson for Battagram police, the van was en route from the Pirwahari area when it came under attack. “Five students and the van driver sustained injuries in the incident,” he said, adding that all the injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Battagram.

One critically injured individual was later referred to Ayub Medical Complex in Abbottabad for specialized treatment, police confirmed.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered, and law enforcement agencies have launched a search operation to apprehend the suspect.

Kuzabanda Station House Officer (SHO) Amjid Khan stated that the assailant’s actions were reportedly motivated by a personal vendetta against the driver of the school van. “The shooter opened fire, recklessly endangering the lives of the children onboard,” Khan said.

The attack has sparked outrage among local residents and educationists. Syed Raqib Shah, president of the Private Education Network (PEN) Battagram chapter, strongly condemned the incident and labeled it an “act of terrorism.” He called on the Battagram District Police Officer to register the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and ensure the immediate arrest of the attacker. Shah warned that failure to act swiftly would provoke a strong reaction from the community.

This incident follows a recent rise in violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Last month, a senior civil judge and a lawyer were gunned down by unknown assailants on motorcycles in Nowshera district. Authorities linked that attack to a case of personal enmity as well.

The Battagram school van shooting has intensified calls for better protection of educational institutions and a stronger crackdown on armed violence in the province.
