Two separate but equally tragic incidents rocked Karachi on Sunday, claiming six lives and leaving multiple families devastated.
In the first incident, a speeding dumper truck collided with a car on the Main Northern Bypass near Hamdard University, killing all three occupants on the spot. According to Surjani Town SHO Mohammed Ali Shah, the car was crushed beneath the massive vehicle. The deceased were identified as 60-year-old Suleman, his 35-year-old son Usama, and 40-year-old Faraz Sikander. Their bodies were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal procedures.
The dumper driver initially fled the scene but was later arrested. He was identified as Gul Baig.
This accident highlights the ongoing crisis of traffic safety in Karachi. Hospital data reveals that nearly 500 people lost their lives and 4,879 were injured in 2024 alone due to traffic accidents, particularly involving heavy vehicles like dumpers and water tankers.
Citizens and civil rights groups have been staging regular protests, urging the government to curb the menace. In response, authorities imposed a daytime ban on heavy vehicles within city limits, recently extended by the Karachi administration. The ban exempts only essential services like medical supplies and food distribution, with heavy vehicles allowed to operate between 10 PM and 6 AM.
Meanwhile, a separate violent episode unfolded off National Highway in the Razzaqabad area, where a family dispute turned deadly. Shah Latif Town SHO Mohammed Ameen Khoso said a quarrel between relatives escalated to gunfire, killing three and injuring two.
The deceased were identified as Usman Munsif (20), Touqeer Siddiq (25), and Touseef Bashir (30), while the injured were Noman Bashir (20) and Munsif Latif (45). Two of the victims were brought dead to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, and the third succumbed to injuries during treatment.
One suspect was apprehended from the scene, along with a recovered firearm. Police have launched further investigations and are pursuing the remaining culprits involved in the brutal clash.
These back-to-back incidents have once again brought Karachi’s traffic chaos and violent disputes into sharp focus, prompting renewed calls for stricter law enforcement and community awareness.
